Larry Harshyne
Thomas Jefferson University, PA·Microbiology & Immunology
Cancer research and clinical trials increasingly depend on measuring immune cells one by one: which types are present, what molecules they carry, and how they change during treatment. Making these measurements well requires specialized instruments and expertise that most individual labs do not have.

immune monitoring
- Grants
- 1 known grant, through May 2029
What they work on
- Provide high-quality, affordable analysis and sorting of cells, biological particles and extracellular vesicles using fluorescence-activated flow cytometers for cancer center researchers.
- Deliver end-to-end immune assays for clinical investigators, from patient sample collection and storage to cytokine profiling on a Luminex FM3D and spatial transcriptomics on a NanoString GeoMx.
- Train cancer center members, staff and trainees in cytometry panel design and data analysis through standardized protocols, monthly working groups and classroom lectures.
- Expand capacity with multilaser cytometers, 96-well plate readers and automated samplers, and develop new flow cytometry approaches for tracking immune health in clinical trial patients.
More about the research
This grant supports a shared facility at a cancer center that provides those measurements to many researchers.
Why it matters
Reliable, standardized immune measurements help cancer researchers understand how tumors and treatments affect the immune system. By giving cancer center members affordable access to cell sorting, cytokine profiling and spatial gene-activity analysis, and by monitoring immune function in clinical trial patients, the facility supports research and trials aimed at improving cancer care.
Known grants
From NIH and NSF research grants. Labs often have other funding we can't see.
Closest labs
Zuhair Ballas
University of Iowa, IA·Medicine & Clinical Research
Provide cancer researchers with high-speed cell sorting, multi-parameter analysis and purification of specific cell subsets for basic and translational studies at the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center.
Karen Creswell
Georgetown University, DC·Microbiology & Immunology
Provide flow cytometry analysis and cell sorting to cancer center members at two sites, sorting cells by transfection markers, stem cell panels and surface or internal markers for functional and molecular follow-up studies.
Patrick Kellish
University of Florida, FL·Microbiology & Immunology
Provide multi-parameter flow cytometry and cell sorting, which reads marker proteins on individual cells and separates populations, to cancer center investigators as a cost-recovered shared service.
