Cancer research often requires counting, sorting and characterizing individual cells, for example separating tumor cells from immune cells or measuring many proteins on each cell. Flow cytometry does this by streaming cells past lasers and reading the light given off by fluorescent labels attached to them.

What they work on
- Provide cancer researchers with high-speed cell sorting, multi-parameter analysis and purification of specific cell subsets for basic and translational studies at the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center.
- Offer up to 40-color analysis and cell sorting using two five-laser Cytek Aurora spectral analyzers, instruments that read each cell's full fluorescence spectrum, with 96-well autosamplers.
- Train investigators and lab staff on bench-top cytometers and analysis software, provide secure data storage, and develop new services as investigators need them.
More about the research
This grant supports the Flow Cytometry Core at the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center, a shared facility that provides these instruments and expertise to the center's cancer researchers.
Why it matters
Shared access to high-parameter flow cytometry and cell sorting lets cancer researchers measure and isolate specific cell types precisely. This could speed basic and translational studies of tumors and immune responses that may eventually inform cancer diagnosis and treatment.
Known grants
From NIH and NSF research grants. Labs often have other funding we can't see.
Closest labs
Zoran Galic
University of California-Los Angeles, CA·Medicine & Clinical Research
Provide cancer center investigators with flow cytometry, mass cytometry, imaging cytometry and cell sorting services using instruments such as the Helios mass cytometer, ImageStream imaging cytometer and Aria high-speed sorters.
Karen Creswell
Georgetown University, DC·Microbiology & Immunology
Provide flow cytometry analysis and cell sorting to cancer center members at two sites, sorting cells by transfection markers, stem cell panels and surface or internal markers for functional and molecular follow-up studies.
Patrick Kellish
University of Florida, FL·Microbiology & Immunology
Provide multi-parameter flow cytometry and cell sorting, which reads marker proteins on individual cells and separates populations, to cancer center investigators as a cost-recovered shared service.
