Georgetown University, DC·Microbiology & Immunology

Many questions in cancer and immune research depend on measuring the individual cells in a sample. Researchers need to know which cell types are present, what proteins each carries, and whether cells are dividing, dying or under stress.

What they work on

  1. Provide flow cytometry analysis and cell sorting to cancer center members at two sites, sorting cells by transfection markers, stem cell panels and surface or internal markers for functional and molecular follow-up studies.
  2. Offer functional assays for cell cycle, apoptosis and oxidative stress, and immunophenotyping of mouse and human tissues and tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes, using the 16-color LSRFortessa and 28-color FACSymphony A3 analyzers.
  3. Expand analysis to more than 40 simultaneous markers by adding a Standard BioTools CyTOF XT mass cytometry system for cancer and immune studies.

More about the research

Often they also need to separate one cell population out for further experiments. Flow cytometry does this by passing cells one at a time past lasers and reading the fluorescent labels attached to them. Cell sorting adds a step that physically separates the labeled cells.

Why it matters

By giving cancer researchers on-site access to cell analysis, cell sorting and expanded high-marker cytometry, the facility supports studies of tumor biology and of how the immune system interacts with cancer. It has contributed to clinical trials and published studies, and its services could help researchers find immune cell patterns relevant to cancer patients.
