Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), medication taken by people without HIV to prevent infection, is highly effective. Yet many people at elevated risk struggle to start it, stay in care and take it consistently.

What they work on
- Model barriers and facilitators for adopting a digital PrEP implementation strategy within India's National AIDS Control Organization Targeted Intervention programs, guided by the EPIS implementation science framework.
- Assess patient and provider preferences to guide adaptation of the digital PrEP intervention so that it better supports PrEP uptake, retention and adherence.
- Evaluate the acceptability, feasibility and sustainability of the adapted digital PrEP implementation strategy among people engaged in routine HIV prevention services.
More about the research
Implementation science is the study of how to get proven interventions to work in real health systems, and it tackles this gap. This project asks whether digital health tools can help people start and keep taking PrEP, and what makes such tools acceptable and sustainable.
Why it matters
Better strategies for helping people start and stay on PrEP could lower new HIV infections among populations at elevated risk. Lessons from India's centralized prevention programs may inform how PrEP is delivered in the United States, where similar barriers, such as inconsistent health care engagement, limit uptake and adherence.
