What they work on
- Identify changeable provider-, practice-, and community-level factors that affect PrEP delivery in primary care, using the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research (CFIR), a structured list of factors that shape program adoption.
- Develop a multi-part implementation strategy to speed PrEP provision for African American primary care patients, grounded in CFIR and Bandura's Social Cognitive Theory of behavior change.
- Conduct a 12-month, two-arm pilot trial at four Philadelphia primary care practices to test whether the PrEP implementation strategy is feasible and acceptable.
More about the research
African Americans make up only about 10% of PrEP users in the United States, a gap driven by individual, interpersonal, and structural barriers. With long-acting forms of PrEP now emerging, making sure primary care practices actually offer PrEP has become more urgent. This project focuses on implementation science, the study of how to get proven treatments into routine practice. It aims to help primary care practices offer PrEP to African American patients more consistently.
Why it matters
African Americans are greatly underrepresented among people using HIV prevention medication. A practice-level strategy that helps primary care clinics and providers offer PrEP more routinely could expand access for African American patients. It could also help reduce new HIV infections, and it could serve as a model for delivering newer long-acting PrEP options in everyday care.
