Randomized clinical trials are how doctors learn which treatments work for people whose lungs fail. A trial's answer is only trustworthy if its participants resemble the patients who will later get the treatment.

What they work on

  1. Test whether mobile patient recruitment strategies make enrollment in respiratory failure randomized trials more representative of the patients who would later receive the treatments.
  2. Test whether behavioral economic framing of consent decisions, which changes how the choice to join a trial is presented, improves the representativeness of respiratory failure trials.
  3. Conduct qualitative interviews with patients who have acute or chronic respiratory failure and are enrolled in prospective cohort studies, to understand their experiences.
  4. Determine whether the 7 most common risk-adjustment prediction models perform fairly across demographic groups, using patient-level data from 15 trials from the PAIR Center, ARDSNet and PETAL.

More about the research

It also depends on whether the scoring tools used to adjust for patients' baseline risk work equally well for everyone. This project studies both problems in trials for acute respiratory failure, a sudden breakdown of breathing, and for chronic, long-lasting respiratory failure.

Why it matters

Treatments for lung failure are judged by clinical trials. When trials under-enroll some groups, or use risk scores that work worse for some demographic groups, the evidence may not fit everyone it is applied to. Finding recruitment and consent methods that broaden enrollment, and showing where common risk models fall short, could make trial results more reliable for the full range of patients with acute and chronic respiratory failure.
