Proteins and small molecules (metabolites) do much of the work in cells. Measuring which ones are present, and how much of each, helps researchers understand both normal biology and disease.

- Grants
- 1 known grant, through Dec 2029
What they work on
- Provide untargeted (omic) and targeted mass spectrometry measurements of proteins for Duke Cancer Institute researchers, using high-resolution instruments such as the Orbitrap Astral and Fusion Lumos Tribrid.
- Offer targeted metabolomics, the precise measurement of chosen small molecules, using triple-quadrupole mass spectrometers and ultra-performance liquid chromatography for basic and clinical studies.
- Support biomarker discovery and verification in clinical research, with rigorous quality control from sample preparation to analysis and data tracking through a laboratory information management system.
- Expand single-cell and low-input proteomics, which measures proteins in very small samples, using newly added automated liquid handling and chromatography equipment.
More about the research
The grant here supports a shared core facility at the Duke Cancer Institute (DCI). The facility measures proteins and metabolites for other research groups using mass spectrometry, an instrument that identifies molecules by weighing them very precisely.
Why it matters
Reliable, affordable protein and metabolite measurements let cancer researchers at the Duke Cancer Institute run studies they could not do in their own labs. These include discovering and verifying biomarkers in clinical research. Better molecular data could support cancer studies that lead to new diagnostic markers.
Known grants
From NIH and NSF research grants. Labs often have other funding we can't see.
