What they work on
- Test whether a collaborative model for developing Science and Technology Studies (STS) teaching modules helps integrate humanities and STEM perspectives in undergraduate courses at four universities.
- Assess whether co-developing STS pedagogy builds new collaborations between humanities and STEM faculty, using ethnographic and qualitative analysis of each year-long implementation.
- Evaluate whether the model raises the recognition and value of STS in four-year degree programs, and produce an open-access best-practices handbook for adapting it to other institutions.
More about the research
Science and Technology Studies (STS), the field that examines the social and ethical sides of science, technology and innovation, offers teaching practices that could bridge this gap.
Why it matters
Graduates in STEM and humanities fields will face ethical and social questions about new technologies in their careers. A tested model and open-access handbook could help colleges add ethics and society content to STEM and humanities courses. It could also help faculty build lasting cross-disciplinary collaborations.
