What they work on
- Examine how algorithms that check fidelity to evidence-based practices shape child welfare workers' decisions, by interviewing workers and observing their daily work in partner agencies.
- Analyze agency documents to understand what conditions and new accountability standards lead child welfare organizations to adopt artificial intelligence systems.
- Assess how AI surveillance affects workers' relationships with families and coworkers, using theories from governance, social work, and science and technology studies.
More about the research
It may affect the decisions workers make and their relationships with the families they serve. This project studies that question in child welfare agencies.
Why it matters
Child welfare agencies are adopting AI tools to meet accountability rules, often with little evidence about how the tools affect practice. Findings could help lawmakers decide what counts as evidence of effectiveness and when to encourage, regulate or monitor AI. They could also help administrators reform surveillance technology so it better supports caseworkers and the families they serve.
