As more wind and solar power enters the electric grid, supply becomes harder to balance, and grids need more flexibility to stay reliable. Grid-edge resources (GERs) can help provide that flexibility.

Grants

What they work on

  1. Develop optimization, machine learning and statistical tools for a grid-edge resource control framework that scales with device population and network size and works across different device types and grid services.
  2. Characterize privacy risks in coordinating customer-side grid devices and design cryptology-based and non-cryptology-based privacy-preserving decentralized optimization methods.
  3. Model stealthy cyberattacks that exploit decentralized grid-edge control algorithms, determine how detectable they are, and develop detection and mitigation strategies.

More about the research

These are devices near customers, such as smart appliances, batteries and rooftop systems, that can adjust their power use. Coordinating millions of different devices, however, raises problems of scale, owner privacy and cyberattacks.

Why it matters

Utilities and grid operators need to absorb growing amounts of renewable energy without losing reliability. A scalable, privacy-preserving and attack-resistant way to coordinate household and other grid-edge devices could make the grid more flexible at lower cost. It could support decarbonization and energy security, protect device owners' data, and inform new electricity market products for industry.
