Rooftop solar and other distributed energy resources (DERs), small power sources spread across a community, could make clean energy cheaper and more reliable. This would require fair, user-focused markets in which local communities can trade and manage that energy.

- Grants
- 1 known grant, through Dec 2027
What they work on
- Gather critical use cases from stakeholders in grid-interactive communities to define research problems that call for multidisciplinary, international collaboration on clean energy.
- Develop new theories and models for user profiling, device-driven energy management, machina economicus (devices acting as market players) and energy fairness in distributed energy resource markets.
- Design new clean energy market architectures and scalable co-simulation tools, and develop trustworthy grid-edge technologies that resist disturbances, attacks and disasters.
More about the research
This planning-phase award supports the US side of an international center co-led by Santa Clara University and Concordia University in Canada. The center will study how to build self-sustaining clean energy systems at the edge of the power grid, where homes and businesses connect.
Why it matters
Fairer, user-centric markets for local clean energy could give more communities affordable and reliable access to renewable power. More resilient energy management at the grid edge could help communities keep power during disturbances, cyberattacks and disasters. The center's openly released co-simulation tools and datasets could support further work by researchers and utilities.
