Clinical trials test new cancer treatments in patients, and each trial has to be scientifically sound, practical to run, and worth the patients' and staff's effort. A cancer center running many trials at once needs a way to judge which studies are well designed, which can realistically enroll enough patients, and which should come first.

What they work on
- Run disease- and discipline-focused site committees that give each proposed cancer clinical trial a first scientific review, judge its feasibility and expected enrollment, and set its priority.
- Review the scientific rationale, design, statistical support and expected enrollment of every clinical study through the center-wide Protocol Review and Monitoring Committee, and track ongoing studies for progress and accrual.
- Rank all clinical research studies across the cancer center to match its strategic plan, giving priority to the local cancer burden, high-priority cancers, and underserved or marginalized communities.
More about the research
This grant supports that oversight system at the Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center (HDFCCC) at UCSF.
Why it matters
Careful review and monitoring of cancer clinical trials helps make sure the trials a cancer center runs are well designed, can enroll enough patients to answer their questions, and focus on the cancers that matter most for its region. Giving priority to studies on high-burden cancers and underserved or marginalized communities could help direct trial resources toward patients who have historically had less access to clinical research.
Known grants
From NIH and NSF research grants. Labs often have other funding we can't see.
