Testing a new cancer treatment depends on more than the drug. Each clinical trial needs a written plan, regulatory approval, trained staff, careful data collection and constant attention to patient safety.

- Grants
- 1 known grant, through Jun 2030
What they work on
- Support cancer clinical trials across the Dan L Duncan Comprehensive Cancer Center by providing protocol development, financial and regulatory oversight, research nursing and data management through the Clinical Trials Support Unit.
- Maintain an electronic database of cancer trial protocols in OnCore, a clinical trial management system, to monitor and report on patient enrollment and the status of each trial.
- Run quality assurance audits, develop standard operating procedures and train investigators and staff in best practices for conducting clinical research.
- Protect trial participants and data validity through Data Review and Safety Monitoring Committees that can stop studies if they uncover undue risks or cannot be completed.
- Monitor enrollment across populations, including children and older adults, and expand cell therapy and phase I trial programs at the center's safety-net hospital.
More about the research
If any of these steps is slow or uneven, promising therapies take longer to reach patients, and some groups of patients may be left out of the studies entirely.
Why it matters
Faster, safer and better-managed clinical trials could help patients with cancer get access to new treatments sooner. Shorter trial start-up times and stronger safety oversight protect participants. Cell therapy and phase I trials at a safety-net hospital extend access to underserved patients. Tracking enrollment helps make sure children and older adults are included, so trial results apply to the people who need the treatments.
