Cameras, microphones and phones can now pick up signals about a person's emotions and behavior, such as facial expressions, voice tone and movement. Paired with artificial intelligence, these tools could help doctors diagnose and monitor many disorders.

What they work on
- Identify benefits, concerns and information needs around perceptual computing in clinical care through in-depth interviews with PC developers, clinicians across specialties, patients and caregivers.
- Prioritize the potential benefits and harms of perceptual computing among expert stakeholders using a three-phase modified Delphi process, starting with a multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) survey that weighs risks against benefits.
- Generate practical solutions and policy guidelines for responsible clinical use of perceptual computing through two decision conferences with a statistically representative subset of the experts.
- Test how perceptual computing metrics from audio and video of mental health intake interviews change clinicians' estimates, and assess how interpretable and acceptable clinicians find them, using before-and-after ratings and cognitive interviews.
More about the research
They also raise hard ethical and practical questions before they can be used responsibly in clinics. Patients may not know data is being collected, or may not want to share it. The tools produce huge amounts of data that are hard to turn into useful information about one patient. And companies with profit motives may want access to the data.
Why it matters
Many conditions, especially in mental health, depend on accurately reading a patient's emotions and behavior. Guidance from this work could help health systems adopt emotion- and behavior-sensing AI tools in ways that protect patient privacy and trust. It could also help clinicians turn these data into useful clinical knowledge, supporting more personalized care across a range of disorders.
