Enhanced recovery protocols bundle evidence-based steps around surgery, such as minimally invasive operations and early feeding afterward. In adults they shorten hospital stays, cut opioid use and lower costs.

What they work on

  1. Optimize the ERAS Neonatal Guidelines for newborn intestinal surgery through a modified Delphi consensus process with clinicians, parents and caregivers, and other stakeholders.
  2. Develop implementation and effectiveness measures using the RE-AIM framework, identify data sources for them, and set acceptable targets such as the share of infants receiving regional anesthetic nerve blocks.
  3. Assess organizational, leadership, resource and trial readiness at U.S. neonatal surgery programs and rank sites to prepare for a future multicenter effectiveness trial.

More about the research

Newborns having intestinal surgery have long recoveries and high complication rates, so they could benefit greatly. Yet the 2020 Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) Neonatal Guidelines have not been widely adopted.

Why it matters

Newborns and infants who need intestinal surgery often face long hospital stays and frequent complications. Refined enhanced recovery guidelines, together with measures to track their use, could pave the way for a trial showing whether these steps shorten recovery and reduce opioid use in this fragile population. If they prove effective, hospitals would have a clearer path to adopting them.
