Health disparities are differences in health between groups of people. They have tangled causes that work at many levels, from biology and behavior to neighborhoods and social systems.

- Grants
- 1 known grant, through May 2029
What they work on
- Expand health disparities research among Mount Sinai faculty at all levels through methodology workshops, health equity seminars, a determinants-of-health journal club, community engagement opportunities and a shared resource repository.
- Award three pilot grants each year to early-stage investigators studying minority, socioeconomically disadvantaged, or sexual and gender minority populations with community-engaged methods, supported by mentoring and a Catalyst Community Board.
- Evaluate all Investigator Development Core programs, together with the center's other cores, including measuring changes in faculty confidence and interest in minority health and health disparities research.
More about the research
Studying them takes a diverse group of researchers trained in methods that cross disciplines and in working closely with communities. Mount Sinai's Institute for Health Equity Research (IHER), created in 2020, leads this kind of research, with a focus on minority health and health disparities (MH/HD).
Why it matters
Health disparities affect racial and ethnic minorities, socioeconomically disadvantaged people, and sexual and gender minorities. Training more researchers in rigorous, community-informed disparities research and funding their early pilot studies could produce stronger evidence on how to reduce these gaps. The program's structure could also serve as a model for other institutions building health equity research.
Known grants
From NIH and NSF research grants. Labs often have other funding we can't see.
