- Increase and diversify the health disparities research workforce through a diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility action plan supported by the Center of Excellence.
- Train early-career investigators in research design, statistical analysis and community-based participatory research, and help them include community members on research and mentoring teams.
- Run the center with community leaders in its governance, coordinated through the African American Health Equity Task Force, and track the scholarly outcomes and careers of supported investigators.
More about the research
Better medical care alone is estimated to close only 10 to 20% of these gaps. Studying these root causes requires researchers from many fields and real partnership with affected communities. These two linked grants fund a Center of Excellence at the University at Buffalo, supported by the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD). The center trains early-career researchers to study health inequities in Buffalo, New York. It is a training and organizational program rather than a single research project.
Why it matters
Race-based health inequities in Buffalo and elsewhere stem largely from social conditions that health care alone does not fix. By training more, and more diverse, researchers to work with communities, the center could produce interventions that address these root causes. Pilot studies in the Buffalo region could inform system-level changes that reduce health inequities affecting African American and other underserved communities.
