What they work on

  1. Generate an initial pool of items measuring daily intersectional stigma, drawing on prior research and semi-structured interviews with 20 Black people with disabilities and 10 content experts.
  2. Refine the item pool through cognitive interviewing and a 7-day pilot daily diary study with 20 Black people with disabilities, checking that items capture changes in stigma over time and across contexts.
  3. Evaluate the scale's structure and predictive validity in a 2-week daily diary study of 200 Black adults with disabilities from the probability-based NORC AmeriSpeak panel.
  4. Examine how intersectional stigma relates to psychological distress over time, and explore mediators and moderators such as emotion regulation, social support and community connection.

More about the research

Intersectionality theory holds that being targeted for more than one identity at once can create stress beyond the sum of its parts. Few quantitative tools can measure this intersectional stigma as it changes from day to day and from setting to setting. Without such a tool, it is hard to study or reduce its health effects.

Why it matters

Researchers lack a validated way to measure the combined, day-to-day stigma that Black people with disabilities experience. A brief, tested questionnaire could enable future observational and intervention studies aimed at reducing the mental health burden of this stigma. National data from this project could also show how stigma relates to psychological distress in this population.
