Underage drinking carries serious harms, and lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) youth who drink face even worse outcomes. These include higher risks of cancer, risky sexual behavior and suicide attempts.

What they work on
- Assess the acceptability and feasibility of ecological momentary assessment (EMA) measures of social stress, alcohol use and protective factors among Hispanic and white LGB youth, using cognitive interviews and a two-week pilot.
- Examine whether daily social stressors predict alcohol use among 50 Hispanic and 50 white LGB youth over a 30-day EMA, and whether positive and negative mood carry that effect.
- Identify sociocultural risk and protective factors, such as coping strategies and social support, that explain differences in alcohol use between Hispanic and white LGB youth.
More about the research
Hispanic LGB youth may be at greater risk still, because stress tied to more than one marginalized identity can add up. Stress theories propose that young people cope with distress by drinking. Little is known about how Hispanic LGB youth respond to social stress, or how coping, social support and mood shape their drinking.
Why it matters
LGB youth, and Hispanic LGB youth in particular, face high risks from early drinking. Identifying in real time which stressors trigger drinking and which coping strategies and support networks protect against it could show who is most at risk. It could also point to protective factors that treatment programs might build on to reduce problem drinking in these groups.
