Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) train a large share of the nation's scientists, yet many have had fewer resources for running a large research enterprise. A central question is how such institutions, and individual faculty within them, can take stock of their research strengths and gaps and plan how to grow.

What they work on
- Conduct a meta-synthesis, a structured combined review of published studies, on the resources and best practices behind a thriving research enterprise, to guide research capacity building at HBCUs.
- Develop a Playbook with assessment rubrics that HBCU leaders can use to evaluate their institution's research capacity and build research growth into strategic planning.
- Create rubrics, based on a published framework of investigator skills and capabilities, that let HBCU faculty assess their research knowledge and write career development action plans.
- Pilot the institutional and faculty assessment tools across a collaboration of five HBCUs.
More about the research
This collaborative project, shared across five HBCUs, aims to build practical tools for that kind of self-assessment.
Why it matters
Research administrators and leaders at HBCUs could use the Playbook to judge where their research infrastructure is strong or weak and to plan investments. Faculty could use the rubrics to map their own career growth as researchers. Stronger research programs at these institutions could widen access to scientific resources and opportunities and help expand the STEM workforce.
Known grants
From NIH and NSF research grants. Labs often have other funding we can't see.
