Smaller colleges often have few links to industry and limited staff to win and manage research funding. As a result, their students can graduate without the skills employers need.

What they work on
- Build partnerships with industry experts and government agencies to identify the skills and knowledge needed for STEM jobs across four diverse institutions in the SUPER Partnerships Collaborative.
- Revise undergraduate curricula and educational experiences to match industry partner needs, and expand links with regional high schools and two-year colleges.
- Strengthen each institution's Office of Sponsored Programs to find, submit and manage funded projects, sharing strategies through cross-cohort learning symposiums.
More about the research
This project brings four institutions together to build that capacity: Winston-Salem State University (a historically Black university, or HBCU), North Arkansas College (a two-year community college), Middle Georgia State University (a primarily undergraduate state university) and St. Vincent College (a small liberal arts college). Together they form the SUPER (Strategic University Practices to Expand Research) Partnerships Collaborative.
Why it matters
The project could help students at minority-serving, primarily undergraduate and two-year institutions gain skills that match regional industry needs. Stronger partnerships and better grant-management capacity may also let these colleges take a larger part in research and regional economic development.
Known grants
From NIH and NSF research grants. Labs often have other funding we can't see.
