Many research fields now depend on large-scale computing, from climate and energy modeling to artificial intelligence. Researchers at smaller colleges often lack access to the machines this work needs.

- Grants
- 1 known grant, through Jun 2027
What they work on
- Add computing capacity, including GPU-accelerated nodes, to the Lawrence high performance computing cluster to speed research in clean energy, sustainability, PTSD and climate change across South Dakota.
- Lower barriers for new HPC users by implementing Open OnDemand, software that provides web-browser access to the cluster.
- Replace Lawrence's aging core components, and broaden participation through outreach to regional collaborators and tribal institutions while sharing unused cycles with the Open Science Grid.
More about the research
This project expands and modernizes Lawrence, the high performance computing (HPC) cluster at the University of South Dakota. A cluster is a group of linked computers that work together on large calculations. Lawrence is open to users at all educational institutions in South Dakota.
Why it matters
Expanded, easier-to-use computing could speed research on clean energy, sustainability, PTSD and climate change across South Dakota. It could also open high performance computing and AI training to students and researchers at the state's smaller colleges and tribal institutions. Spare capacity is shared with researchers nationwide through the Open Science Grid.
Known grants
From NIH and NSF research grants. Labs often have other funding we can't see.
