People living with HIV (PLWH) now face rising risks of heart and blood vessel disease, known as cardiovascular disease (CVD). Preventing and treating its risk factors, such as high blood pressure, diabetes and high cholesterol, is central to their long-term care.

What they work on
- Refine the INTEGRATE-RX pharmacist-led HIV and cardiovascular care program using human-centered design, and assess its acceptability among patients, pharmacists, physicians, peers and administrators.
- Test whether INTEGRATE-RX improves one-year systolic blood pressure, medication adherence and delivery fidelity compared with usual care, in a stepped-wedge cluster randomized trial of people living with HIV.
- Measure secondary effects of INTEGRATE-RX on HIV viral load, LDL cholesterol, quality of life and RE-AIM implementation measures, which track reach and adoption.
- Estimate the cost-effectiveness and budget impact of INTEGRATE-RX, including cost per patient with controlled hypertension and per disability-adjusted life year (DALY) saved, and model scale-up to 50% coverage by 2030.
More about the research
Clinical pharmacists who manage medications are known to improve HIV medicine use, viral control and staying in care. Whether pharmacist-led programs that combine HIV and heart care actually work, are worth the cost and can be scaled up has not been well studied.
Why it matters
People living with HIV face growing cardiovascular risks along with barriers to getting and taking medications. If pharmacist-led care proves effective and affordable, it could help clinics and county health programs control blood pressure and cholesterol in this population. The cost data could guide decisions about expanding pharmacists' roles in chronic disease care.
