More than 63% of US adults work, and work has a strong influence on their health. The COVID-19 pandemic reshaped work conditions and put heavy pressure on workers' mental health and well-being, especially among essential workers.

What they work on
- Study risks to mental health and well-being among essential workers, including nurses and physicians, firefighters and childcare workers, using a Total Worker Health framework that combines safety with broader health promotion.
- Investigate mental health, well-being and safety among LGBTQ workers, an under-studied worker group.
- Test participatory approaches for engaging workers and stakeholders to move research from studying causes and surveillance toward interventions for outcomes such as slips, trips and falls.
- Run a data-driven Pilot Project Program that funds research on emerging worker health and safety issues, and expand the Total Worker Health certificate to non-degree-seeking health professionals.
More about the research
Total Worker Health (TWH) is an approach that combines traditional workplace safety with broader efforts to protect and promote worker health and well-being.
Why it matters
Essential workers such as nurses, physicians, firefighters and childcare workers, as well as LGBTQ workers, face risks to their mental health and safety on the job. Research on these risks, along with practical approaches shared with employers and policymakers, could help improve workplace practices and policies. It could also build a trained workforce to protect worker well-being.
