Pediatric acute respiratory distress syndrome (PARDS) is a sudden, severe lung failure in children, usually triggered by lung infections. It affects about 6% of children on breathing tubes, and about a third of children with severe PARDS die, many of them previously healthy and very young.

Medicine & Clinical Research

- 1 known grant, through Dec 2028
What they work on
- Test whether markers of neutrophil cell death, including neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs), in blood and airway samples taken twice in the first week of intubation predict longer intubation or death in children with PARDS.
- Determine whether a higher blood ratio of inflammatory Th17 cells to regulatory T cells (Tregs) is associated with poor clinical outcomes in intubated children with or at risk for PARDS.
- Integrate RNA sequencing, metabolomic and cytokine data with machine learning to link clinical phenotypes with biological endotypes of PARDS.
More about the research
No therapies speed recovery, partly because the illness looks very different from child to child.
Why it matters
Children with severe lung failure on breathing machines could benefit if neutrophil death markers and immune ratios help doctors identify which patients face the highest risk. Understanding the biological drivers of different PARDS subtypes could inform targeted therapies to reduce disability and death from this condition.
