Computers and software are changing fast, and many research fields cannot take full advantage of supercomputers, artificial intelligence (AI) and data science. They need people who understand both the science and the code.

high performance computing
- Grants
- 1 known grant, through Aug 2029
What they work on
- Build a sustainable, scalable pipeline of Research Software Engineers to support social, behavioral and economic sciences and coastal sciences research, in partnership with Howard University, Delaware State University and Lincoln University.
- Establish a graduate-level course and a pilot RSE certificate, with training and career development programs that help recruit and retain research software engineers.
- Study how data-driven machine learning, AI and high-performance computing (HPC, large parallel supercomputers) can be applied to problems in social, behavioral and economic sciences and in coastal sciences and infrastructure.
More about the research
Research Software Engineers (RSEs), also called cyberinfrastructure professionals, fill this gap by working alongside domain scientists. Few such experts serve some fields, though. This project builds a team and a regional network of RSEs in the Mid-Atlantic. It focuses on two fields that RSEs have traditionally underserved: social, behavioral and economic sciences, and coastal sciences and infrastructure.
Why it matters
Social scientists and coastal researchers could benefit from skilled software engineers who help them use supercomputers, machine learning and AI on their research problems. Training and certifying RSEs across partner Minority Serving Institutions could provide a steady supply of these specialists for Mid-Atlantic research.
Known grants
From NIH and NSF research grants. Labs often have other funding we can't see.
