Cancer research often relies on tumor models that do not reflect the full range of patients a hospital actually treats. If the models used to study tumors and test drugs come mostly from a narrow group of patients, findings may not apply equally well to everyone.

Grants

What they work on

  1. Develop more than 500 new patient-derived xenograft (PDX) models, patient tumors grown in mice, from the patient populations served by the cancer center.
  2. Characterize the new PDX models so that researchers know the features of each tumor they study.
  3. Test the PDX models so they can support cancer center research studies that better represent the center's patient population.

More about the research

This project aims to build a large, more representative collection of living tumor models.

Why it matters

Tumor models that come from a broad cross-section of a cancer center's patients could help ensure that research findings and drug testing apply to the people the center actually treats, including groups that may be underrepresented in existing models. A collection of more than 500 new patient-derived xenografts could serve as a shared resource for cancer studies at the center.
