Antibiotic resistance, the ability of bacteria to survive drugs meant to kill them, is a major public health problem worldwide. It is driven in part by misuse and overuse of antibiotics.

What they work on
- Assess the translation potential of an automated dynamic antibiogram through experiential learning and first-hand interviews across the healthcare industry ecosystem.
- Develop a system that connects to laboratory information systems and uses web frameworks to turn microbiology lab results into real-time antibiotic susceptibility reports.
- Enable customized filtering of resistance data by patient location, specimen type and time period, while accommodating the differing data structures and reporting needs of different institutions.
More about the research
To choose a drug, clinicians often rely on an antibiogram, a report summarizing which antibiotics work against which bacteria at a given institution. These reports are usually static and updated rarely, sometimes only once a year, so the guidance they offer can be out of date.
Why it matters
Up-to-date, filterable resistance data could help clinicians in hospitals, clinics and long-term care facilities choose the right antibiotic for each patient. Better choices could reduce deaths, shorten hospital stays and lower costs. Better prescribing could also slow the spread of antibiotic resistance driven by antibiotic misuse.
Known grants
From NIH and NSF research grants. Labs often have other funding we can't see.
