Large collections of genomic and health data are increasingly stored on cloud platforms rather than on computers at individual universities. The hope is that this 'democratizes' data science: any researcher with an internet connection could analyze the data, not just those at institutions with powerful local computing.

What they work on
- Describe and critically assess how the availability of NIH cloud-based data sharing and analysis platforms has changed patterns of who accesses large-scale genomic and linked health data and for what purposes.
- Compare the perspectives of different categories of underrepresented data scientists on the opportunities and barriers they encounter when accessing and analyzing genomic data on cloud platforms, using in-depth qualitative methods.
- Convene an Expert Advisory Group together with platform developers and other interested parties to review the findings and propose approaches for more inclusive and equitable cloud-based genomic data access.
More about the research
Whether that is actually happening has not been examined. This project investigates who uses NIH-supported cloud data sharing and analysis platforms, for what questions, and what stands in the way.
Why it matters
If cloud platforms mainly serve researchers who already had computing resources, the range of health questions asked of genomic data stays narrow, which limits who benefits from genomic medicine. This project could identify concrete barriers facing researchers at under-resourced institutions and give platform developers and policymakers evidence-based options for broadening participation in genomic data science.
