Jon-Paul Bingham
University of Hawaii at Manoa, HI·Education Research
Genomics, the study of an organism's full set of DNA, is growing fast in research and precision medicine. That growth requires more trained people who can run sequencing instruments, produce high-quality data, and analyze it.

bioinformatics
- Grants
- 1 known grant, through May 2028
What they work on
- Build an undergraduate and graduate feeder pipeline across the University of Hawaii network that supports student research and develops genomics skills.
- Provide "on-the-degree" training for master's and PhD students in next-generation sequencing (NGS) workflows, instrument operation and maintenance, and bench skills for high-quality data.
- Create an advanced upskilling platform, leading to a one-year Graduate Certificate Program, that prepares a diverse genomics workforce for research and industry.
More about the research
People from groups underrepresented in biomedical research also need to be included. This grant is a training core rather than a research project. It builds an educational pipeline called PoWER-G (Promotion of Workforce Employment and Readiness in Genomics) within the University of Hawaii system and the planned Pacific Center for Genome Research.
Why it matters
PoWER-G could help meet the national need for skilled genomics staff in research cores and precision medicine. It could also increase the share of people from underrepresented groups, drawing on Hawaii's cultural and ethnic diversity. Trainees could go on to staff and lead genomic cores nationally and mentor future scientists.
Known grants
From NIH and NSF research grants. Labs often have other funding we can't see.
