Older Black women make up less than 15% of women in the United States, yet they account for half of new HIV infections among women. Because pregnancy is no longer a concern, many use condoms less often.

What they work on
- Revise the Woman to Woman (W2W) HIV prevention program for older adults by identifying key themes from reproductive health histories and building them into the program.
- Deliver the revised group-level W2W program to older Black women recruited from low-income senior housing and a Black community center.
- Assess the feasibility, acceptability, and early efficacy of the adapted program in a small pilot randomized controlled trial (RCT), to prepare for a larger trial.
More about the research
HIV prevention services also tend to overlook them. Ageism, stigma about sexual risk among older adults, and a lack of research on their sexual behavior all play a part. Many older adults also do not know their HIV status, so infection may be more common than reported. No proven HIV prevention programs exist for this group.
Why it matters
There are no evidence-based HIV prevention programs for older Black women, a group with a high share of new infections among U.S. women. Showing that an adapted W2W program is workable and acceptable could lead to a full-scale trial. It could eventually give community centers and housing programs a tested tool to lower HIV risk among older Black women.
