Asthma is one of the most common long-term illnesses of childhood. Children from low-income families are more likely to receive too little preventive care and to have worse outcomes.

What they work on
- Identify the key parts of successful, lasting community health worker asthma care models through a rapid scoping review and intervention mapping with Rochester community partners.
- Assess local barriers and facilitators to putting a community health worker asthma model into practice, using implementation science frameworks.
- Co-design with community partners an adapted community health worker asthma model, including its implementation strategies and target outcomes.
- Pilot the co-designed model in a single-group study of children with persistent asthma, measuring fidelity, feasibility, acceptability and early clinical effectiveness.
More about the research
Community health workers (CHWs) are trusted local staff who can teach families how to manage asthma at home, and such programs can improve health. What is less clear is how to set them up so communities accept them and they last. This project uses implementation science, the study of how to put proven health programs into everyday practice. It aims to design and test a CHW asthma care model for children in Rochester, New York.
Why it matters
This work could help reduce gaps in asthma outcomes for low-income children in Rochester and similar communities. It aims to deliver a home-based asthma education program, run by community health workers, that families find acceptable and health systems can sustain. A refined model would be ready for testing in a larger trial.
