Medical tools such as genetic tests and symptom questionnaires only help patients if clinicians actually use them and know how to read the results. Both of this PI's projects study how to turn such evidence into routine care.

What they work on
- Advance a genetics-enabled learning health system at Northwestern that uses electronic health record genetic results, patient-reported data and web tools to bring emerging genetic evidence into hospital and community clinics.
- Test three strategies to improve cascade genetic testing (testing relatives of a patient with a hereditary heart disease or cancer condition), reducing reliance on that patient to inform family members.
- Co-design and evaluate harmonized projects with a national network of genetics-enabled learning health systems, and share methods for scaling evidence-based genetic medicine.
- Define guidelines for interpreting pain and function questionnaires (KOOS, WOMAC, SF-36, VR-12, PROMIS) in knee osteoarthritis, tailored to patient traits and comorbidities, using the Osteoarthritis Initiative and a 12-site knee replacement cohort.
- Validate the questionnaire interpretation guidelines in 800 knee osteoarthritis patients assessed every two months for a year, and evaluate whether orthopedic clinicians adopt them.
More about the research
One project focuses on genetic testing for inherited heart disease and cancer. The other focuses on patient questionnaires for knee arthritis and knee replacement.
Why it matters
Families with inherited heart disease or cancer risk could benefit if more relatives receive cascade genetic testing, and the health system methods developed may help other hospitals bring genetic results into routine care. For the many older adults with knee osteoarthritis, including people considering knee replacement, tailored guidelines could help clinicians read pain and function questionnaire scores consistently and use them in individual treatment decisions.
