What they work on
- Increase degree completion among about 45 academically talented, low-income ceramic and glass engineering undergraduates at three universities by providing scholarships of up to $15,000 for up to five years.
- Build strong scholar cohorts and career readiness through faculty, peer and industry mentoring, an intensive paid summer program, industry visits, professional society chapters, undergraduate research, internships and conference travel.
- Evaluate which support strategies help low-income students persist in STEM, using surveys, interviews, focus groups and reviews of student work conducted by an outside evaluator.
More about the research
Many talented students with financial need struggle to stay in STEM programs and finish their degrees. This project is an education program, not a laboratory research project. Its goal is to help these students graduate in ceramic and glass engineering.
Why it matters
The program could help grow the small pipeline of ceramic and glass engineers who are needed in the semiconductor, energy and space sectors. It directly supports low-income students with financial need through scholarships, mentoring and industry experience. Its evaluation could show which strategies help such students stay in and complete STEM degrees.
Known grants
From NIH and NSF research grants. Labs often have other funding we can't see.
