Many older Americans struggle to keep a safe, affordable and stable home. Housing insecurity, meaning limited access to affordable, stable, safe and adequate housing and neighborhoods, is rising fastest among older adults.

What they work on

  1. Build typologies of life course housing histories, combining housing assistance and multiple dimensions of housing insecurity, for midlife and older adults using longitudinal Panel Study of Income Dynamics data.
  2. Test how health and disability trajectories in midlife and older age relate to earlier histories of housing assistance and housing insecurity, especially during emerging adulthood, using longitudinal and latent variable models.
  3. Assess whether the links between housing history types and later health and disability trajectories differ by neighborhood context.

More about the research

About one-third of them spend more than 30% or even 50% of their income on housing. Housing insecurity is linked to chronic disease, disability and earlier death. Federal housing assistance is linked to better health, but it reaches only about one-third of income-eligible, cost-burdened adults aged 50 and older. A key open question is whether housing problems or help in early adulthood shape health decades later.

Why it matters

Low-income older adults increasingly face housing costs that strain their budgets and health, and assistance programs reach only a fraction of those eligible. Showing for whom, how and when housing assistance and housing insecurity matter most for later health and disability could guide when and how housing programs intervene. It could also strengthen the case for expanding assistance to older adults.
