University of Chicago, IL·Medicine & Clinical Research·Early-career
Many health problems go untreated not because treatments are missing but because clinics are not set up to find and follow the patients who need them. Research in this group targets that gap, designing and testing changes to how care is organized and how patient-reported information is collected, with a focus on safety net clinics that serve low-income communities.

What they work on
- Identify barriers and facilitators to diagnosing and managing post-traumatic stress disorder in safety net primary care and HIV care, drawing on the perspectives of healthcare leaders and providers in these settings.
- Evaluate, using mixed quantitative and qualitative methods, whether PTSD diagnosis and symptom management improve in a multi-specialty primary and HIV care practice after a clinically integrated system is introduced.
- Mentor junior investigators in system-level research on behavioral and physical health outcomes while obtaining further training in implementation science and mixed methods.
- Operate a competitive, NIH-style review program that awards pilot grants in diabetes translation research to early-stage investigators and to investigators new to the field.
- Support pilot projects that adapt interventions or implementation strategies, build clinical and community research partnerships, and import methods from other fields to address diabetes translation barriers, including mini-grants that bring practice partners into project planning.
More about the research
Clinical informatics, the use of electronic health record systems and structured patient data to support decisions in real time, is the main lever, and the work spans mental health and chronic disease care.
Why it matters
PTSD is widespread in communities affected by violence and trauma yet frequently goes undiagnosed, and untreated PTSD is tied to substance use, cardiovascular disease and early death. Building screening and symptom management into safety net primary care and HIV clinics could help these patients get recognized and treated. The diabetes pilot program funds early-career investigators to develop interventions and implementation strategies that put diabetes evidence into clinical and community practice.
