What they work on

  1. Investigate how HBCUs with diverse academic cultures graduate African American STEM students at higher rates than other institutions, using convergence research across the Morehouse, Spelman and Virginia State hub and about fifty partner HBCUs.
  2. Examine why HBCUs produce a higher rate of African American STEM students who go on to earn PhDs, and how these schools foster a greater sense of well-being in their students.
  3. Apply a common theoretical framework to identify the individual and systemic vulnerabilities students face and the institutional supports that promote their success and retention.
  4. Develop evidence-based interventions through community-based participatory research, and share data and results across the HBCU network through webinars, white papers and workshop-based conferences.

More about the research

Learning why these schools succeed could help all of higher education, and society, support students better.

Why it matters

Colleges trying to raise graduation and PhD rates among African American STEM students could use evidence drawn from HBCUs to design better supports. The center intends to turn its findings into evidence-based interventions and to share data and results across HBCUs so they can improve student outcomes. It will also document HBCUs' contributions to STEM education at local, state and national levels.
