What they work on

  1. Test whether listening training with immediate feedback plus speaking practice improves articulatory coordination of novel consonant clusters more than speaking practice alone, in a two-group training study.
  2. Record tongue, lip and jaw movements with electromagnetic articulography over several weeks, alongside listening accuracy and response time.
  3. Use statistical modeling to determine whether gains in speech perception come before or alongside gains in speech production.

More about the research

Earlier research suggests that hearing fine differences between sounds may help people produce them. This doctoral dissertation project asks whether targeted listening practice makes the movements of speech more precise and better coordinated.

Why it matters

The findings could guide more targeted ways to teach pronunciation to second-language learners. They could also shape speech therapy for people recovering from speech impairments. The work may also inform speech technology by clarifying how listening skill shapes the coordination of the tongue, lips and jaw.

Test whether four sessions of phonetic training improve second-language learners' perception and mental processing of word stress, measured with recall, discrimination and identification tasks before and after training.

Test whether a period of perceptual training, in which children learn to classify correct and incorrect "r" sounds, improves their response to visual-acoustic biofeedback treatment delivered via telepractice.

Ayoub Daliri

Evaluate how exposure to auditory errors alters predictive sensorimotor processes in children and adults who stutter, using behavioral and neurophysiological recordings to test whether stuttering involves inaccurate speech predictions across the lifespan.
