What they work on
- Investigate how the amount of social media use and positive or negative online experiences affect depression, anxiety and suicidal ideation trajectories over six months in 100 at-risk Texas youth.
- Collect twice-daily ecological momentary assessments and objective app-recorded social media use via a smartphone (mHealth) app to capture real-time emotional responses to social media.
- Determine which social context factors, such as victimization and positive or negative in-person interactions, change the link between social media use and internalizing symptoms.
More about the research
Social media use has grown during the same period. Still, it is unclear whether and how social media harms or helps mental health, especially for teens already struggling. Most past studies took a single snapshot in time and rarely looked at both harmful and protective effects.
Why it matters
Teen depression, anxiety and suicide risk are a public health crisis. Showing how social media use and experiences relate to symptoms over time in at-risk youth could inform clinical interventions and prevention programs. Clinicians, families and schools could use these findings to support teen mental health.
