Many students in high-need schools lack mathematics teachers who can convey the excitement and deep structure of the subject. Mathematics is a strong predictor of college success, so this gap matters.

What they work on
- Engage 32 pre-service secondary mathematics teachers in mentored research in areas including data science, statistics, mathematical biology, knot theory and number theory through a summer program and academic year.
- Guide participants to translate their research experiences into classroom-ready teaching materials with in-classroom coaching from master teacher pedagogical mentors.
- Evaluate how authentic research experiences change pre-service teachers' self-efficacy, content knowledge and teaching practices, and how these changes appear in instruction and student outcomes in high-need schools.
More about the research
This teacher preparation project asks whether doing real mathematical research makes future secondary math teachers more confident and skilled. It also examines whether that research experience changes how these teachers teach in high-need classrooms.
Why it matters
Preparing mathematics teachers who bring research-informed, inquiry-based teaching to classrooms could improve math and STEM learning for thousands of students in high-need San Joaquin Valley schools. The project's evaluation could also show how research experiences shape teacher confidence and classroom practice, which may inform other teacher preparation programs.
Known grants
From NIH and NSF research grants. Labs often have other funding we can't see.
