Lupus is an autoimmune disease in which the immune system attacks a person's own tissues, and it falls hardest on women, especially Black women. A long-standing obstacle to understanding it has been the lack of large community-based groups of patients with confirmed diagnoses and good representation of groups historically left out of research.

What they work on
- Test whether social determinants of health, such as economic and neighborhood conditions, predict work loss, end-stage kidney disease and mortality among people with systemic lupus erythematosus in the Atlanta-area GOAL cohort.
- Measure the burden and impact of the COVID-19 pandemic at a population level among people with systemic lupus and primary cutaneous lupus erythematosus.
- Estimate the incidence and prevalence of systemic and cutaneous lupus and evaluate outcomes in a rural Georgia population with a large number of African American residents.
More about the research
Without that, basic questions about how lupus unfolds, how it is treated, and where care falls short are hard to answer.
Why it matters
Lupus disproportionately affects women and people from minority groups, and racial disparities in outcomes persist and may be widening. By linking social and neighborhood conditions to hard outcomes such as work loss, kidney failure and death, and by measuring lupus in a rural, largely Black population for the first time, this work could show where care and policy need to change to narrow those gaps.
