Arthritis and other rheumatic and musculoskeletal conditions shape how people move, sleep and feel every day, and the outcomes they lead to—pain, disability, loss of independence—are often what matter most to patients. Studying prevention and treatment of these conditions well requires more than clinical visits: it requires measuring what happens in a person's ordinary daily life and designing studies with input from the people who will live with the results.

- Grants
- 1 known grant, through Aug 2027
What they work on
- Provide methodological support for clinical research on rheumatic and musculoskeletal conditions, spanning study design, outcome selection, adaptive and pragmatic trial design, epidemiology, economic evaluation, genomics and bioinformatics.
- Facilitate investigator use of existing databases and registries, promote safe data management, and assist with statistical analyses that maximize the value of study data.
- Build sustained two-way exchange between community stakeholders and research teams so that research questions, study design, comparators and intervention procedures reflect personal and community perspectives.
- Help research teams assemble daily-life assessment plans using accelerometry for physical activity, sedentary behavior and sleep, mobile and sensor-based applications for behavioral markers, and wearable biosensors to predict physiological and psychological states.
More about the research
This center supports clinical research on preventing or controlling these conditions, with a particular focus on prevention strategies and interventions that work through lifestyle, behavior, medical care and rehabilitation.
Why it matters
People living with arthritis and other rheumatic and musculoskeletal conditions face pain, limited mobility and loss of function. By supporting prevention-focused clinical research that measures activity, sleep and behavior in daily life with wearables and sensors, and that incorporates community and patient perspectives into study design, the center aims to help develop lifestyle, behavioral, medical and rehabilitative interventions that improve how people feel and function.
Known grants
From NIH and NSF research grants. Labs often have other funding we can't see.
