To deliver reliable service, the networks that make up the Internet have to be constantly monitored. Network telemetry systems watch traffic as it flows.

What they work on
- Design a multi-objective, approximation-based scheme that schedules monitoring queries on a single multi-stage programmable switch, balancing accuracy, latency and reporting load.
- Extend the query scheduling scheme to telemetry queries that require visibility into traffic across multiple switches in a network.
- Support adaptive telemetry applications that keep state and run iteratively on runtime-programmable data planes, and experimentally evaluate the resulting scalable telemetry system.
More about the research
They help detect new cyberattacks and keep services like video streaming running smoothly. Modern programmable switches let these systems run monitoring tasks, written as queries, directly on network hardware at full speed. Today's systems, however, assume fixed traffic and query workloads. They don't scale to many queries or high traffic, and they handle only simple tasks on a single switch.
Why it matters
Scalable, adaptive network monitoring could help network operators detect new cyberattacks sooner. It could also help them keep performance-sensitive services, such as video streaming, at high quality. Internet users and organizations that rely on secure, reliable networks would benefit.
