The geosciences tackle some of society's most pressing problems, including energy, air quality, climate, water supply, food security and natural disasters. Yet women, especially women from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups, remain scarce in the field, which shrinks the pool of people working on these problems.

What they work on
- Test whether the benefits of the PROGRESS mentoring program extend to undergraduate women from multiple underrepresented groups and to women with intersectional identities, using a longitudinal experimental design.
- Determine whether PROGRESS benefits remain consistent when male mentors are included alongside female mentors and role models.
- Evaluate whether PROGRESS can be scaled to at least seven U.S. regions and diverse institution types through a train-the-trainer implementation model.
More about the research
This project studies whether mentoring can help close that gap, and how a proven mentoring program can be expanded nationally.
Why it matters
Undergraduate women considering geoscience careers, particularly women from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups, could benefit directly from mentoring, workshops and peer networks. The findings may show colleges and professional communities how to expand mentoring programs effectively, for example by training new leaders or including male mentors. Over time, this could widen the workforce addressing climate, water and natural hazards.
