What they work on
- Address Utah's nation-leading melanoma incidence through sun-safety research, prevention and education efforts.
- Reduce lung cancer, Utah's leading cause of cancer death, through tobacco control and radon-reduction research and policy.
- Conduct community-engaged and implementation research through the Center for HOPE to address cancer differences in Utah's rural and frontier populations, partnering with Federally Qualified Health Centers and a Community Advisory Board.
More about the research
Utah has the highest melanoma rate in the nation, and lung cancer is its leading cause of cancer death. Huntsman Cancer Institute is Utah's official cancer center and the only NCI-designated cancer center in the Mountain West. Its Community Outreach and Engagement program tracks cancer patterns across Utah and directs research, prevention and policy toward the state's most pressing needs.
Why it matters
Utah residents could benefit, particularly rural and frontier communities facing differences in cancer outcomes. Priority areas include melanoma, lung cancer from tobacco and radon, inherited cancer risk, and HPV-related cancers. Community-engaged research, prevention education and policy work in these areas could improve prevention and care.
