People with substance use disorder (SUD) face a higher risk of heart disease, but the biological links are not fully understood. This project proposes one possible chain of events.

What they work on
- Calculate oxidative balance scores for 101,316 National Center for Health Statistics participants and relate them to plasma volatile organic compound levels in people with and without substance use disorder and cardiovascular disease.
- Measure plasma VOCs and oxidative damage markers, 8-OHdG (DNA damage) and protein carbonyls (protein damage), in 800 cardiovascular center patients to test whether SUD raises VOCs, oxidative stress and CVD risk.
- Build a central database linking VOC exposure, oxidative balance, oxidative stress biomarkers and CVD risk in substance use disorder patients to support a larger follow-up study.
More about the research
Drug use increases exposure to volatile organic compounds (VOCs), chemicals that evaporate easily and are found in smoke and solvents. These compounds may throw off the body's balance between oxidants, which damage cells, and the antioxidants that protect them. That imbalance, called oxidative stress, may in turn raise the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD).
Why it matters
Linking VOC exposure and oxidative stress to heart disease in people with substance use disorder could point to new biomarkers. Such blood markers might help flag high cardiovascular risk in this group. The work could also reveal possible treatment targets and guide public health efforts on substance use and heart health.
