Many eye diseases change the fine structure of eye tissues. To understand these diseases and test treatments, researchers need to see how that structure changes and how the changes affect vision.

- Grants
- 1 known grant, last ended Aug 2026
What they work on
- Provide histology, electron microscopy, confocal and super-resolution microscopy, and animal surgery imaging to determine how tissue structure changes in eye diseases, disease models and after experimental treatments.
- Support localization of proteins that control retinal function, and imaging of tissue changes in retinal and optic nerve degenerations.
- Correlate retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) shape measurements with genotype and function, and image eye tissue changes after gene and drug delivery to the back of the eye.
- Develop imaging approaches for primary and metastatic eye tumors, including correlating tissue findings with MRI contrast agents and tele-imaging.
More about the research
This grant supports the Structural Biology and Imaging Core, a shared facility for vision researchers in the Atlanta Vision Research Community (AVRC). The core helps them compare normal and abnormal tissue in eye diseases, in animal models of disease, and after experimental treatments.
Why it matters
By giving vision researchers access to advanced tissue imaging, this core supports studies of retinal degeneration, optic nerve damage, eye cancers and gene or drug delivery to the eye. This work could eventually inform new treatments and imaging tools for people with these eye diseases.
Known grants
From NIH and NSF research grants. Labs often have other funding we can't see.
