Immigrants to the United States, or 'New Americans,' will soon make up a large share of older adults. Like U.S.-born high-risk older adults, they face a higher risk of poor health outcomes from dementia.

What they work on

  1. Explore the experiences and care strategies of high-risk New American older adults with dementia and their informal family caregivers.
  2. Adapt Active Caregiving: Empowering Skills (ACES), an evidence-based caregiver skills program, for New American families. The adaptation will use these findings and the Ecological Validity Model, a framework for cultural tailoring.
  3. Determine whether the adapted ACES intervention is feasible and acceptable to community-dwelling New American older adults with dementia and their caregivers, through a feasibility study.

More about the research

Yet few dementia care or caregiving programs have been adapted for them, and past adaptations were not done or documented systematically. This career development award pairs mentored training with a research project. The project aims to tailor an established caregiver program to New American families living with dementia.

Why it matters

New American older adults with dementia and their family caregivers carry a heavy and growing health burden, yet few programs address their needs. An adapted caregiver program that fits their culture and circumstances could be a first step toward better health for these families. The project also responds to recognized gaps in understanding how immigration affects dementia care.
