What they work on
- Run academic-year environmental science internships in which NWIC undergraduates do lab, field and data analysis research on Salish Sea water quality, seafood safety and ecosystem monitoring.
- Pair undergraduates with graduate student researchers in a near-peer mentoring model, giving graduate students leadership roles while building undergraduates' research skills.
- Test whether sustained academic-year research experiences improve undergraduate STEM persistence, retention and career preparation.
More about the research
Tribal colleges are well placed to train scientists who address such local problems. This project at Northwest Indian College (NWIC) builds on the Salish Sea Research Center to create an academic-year research internship program in environmental science. The project will also study whether sustained, year-long research experiences improve undergraduate STEM outcomes.
Why it matters
This project could strengthen the region's ability to monitor water quality, seafood safety and ecosystems in the Salish Sea. It would do so by training NWIC students for careers in environmental science and natural resource management. Its findings on year-long internships and near-peer mentoring could guide other colleges in designing undergraduate research programs.
Known grants
From NIH and NSF research grants. Labs often have other funding we can't see.
