Indiana University, IN·Public Health & Epidemiology
Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) may be shaped partly by the stresses people face in daily life. These stresses may differ between people in cities and people in rural areas.

What they work on
- Determine where, when, and what environmental stressors are experienced by 300 urban and 300 rural Indiana residents with mild cognitive impairment, using the STRIVE smartphone app, GPS tracking, and smartwatch data.
- Determine whether links between environmental stressors, living environment, and progression from mild cognitive impairment to dementia differ between urban and rural residents, using repeated cognitive testing over 24 months.
- Analyze participants' text and photo stressor reports with qualitative thematic analysis to describe each person's usual environment and stress exposures.
More about the research
This study asks where, when, and what environmental stressors people at high risk for dementia experience. It also asks whether these stressors help explain urban-rural differences in who goes on to develop dementia.
Why it matters
People in rural and urban Indiana may face different everyday stressors that affect their risk of dementia. Identifying which environmental stressors are linked to progression from mild cognitive impairment to Alzheimer's disease and related dementias could point to new treatment targets and prevention strategies. These could help reduce urban-rural gaps in dementia.
